Time. Research. Instinct.

Whether you are in a full time job or in between jobs; looking for a new role can be daunting & challenging. With so many websites, recruitment agencies and options, how do you end up working in the right role for you? Here are just a few tips that from my years within recruitment I have come to find as the most valuable in helping people find their path.
  • First step is to make a list. Write down what it is you love to do in a working role, and what it is you don't. People tend to forget the tasks they previously hated when applying for new roles, they have this hope that it will be different in a new company, tasks are tasks, and if you hated them once, you sure will hate them again. This list will help you narrow down your search, even if you do not know what you want to do, you certainly know what you don't.
  • Take 10 minutes out of your day to do a visualisation. Visualise what the company you want to work for looks like, what kind of desk are you sitting at, what are you wearing and what are the people like? If you visualise a really creative office whilst wearing jeans and a pool table in the background, then stop looking at city suited and booted jobs, and vice versa. Listen to what you actually want from a company.
  • Use LinkedIn wisely. Make sure your profile is up to date, informative and gives a good impression of who you are. Add as many relevant connections you can. Send messages to the head honchos of a target company expressing a keen interest (make sure to tell them why and make it relevant to them). Out of 10 tries you never know you may just get that 1 response back, and that could lead to an interview, which could lead to taking on the job of your dreams.

Whilst these are simple steps, we often forget to adhere to them when chucked into the world of job searching. Just remember to take your time, do your research and go with your own instinct.
